WORK CONTENT:

This project provides you with a diverse experience in that your activities will take place in two locations and will also give you the opportunity to coach other sports as well:

  1. You'll spend some of your afternoons and evenings coaching and/or training at a Cricket Club in Auckland.

  2. During the day you will assist with sports sessions at a school in one of Auckland's suburbs. You'll assist with a variety of sports depending on the season with children from communities including Maori, the South Pacific islands and children from many other countries. You'll also be assisting in the classroom and with school activities. Help is very much needed at this busy school so your time will be very appreciated by both students and teachers!

You'll work with a variety of ages at the club and during the weekend you will have an opportunity to compete yourself and test your abilities against the Kiwis! The club we work with has a very lively social scene and you will be welcomed with open arms.

1. YOUR PROJECT AT THE CLUB:
This element of your programme will take place in the late afternoons and evenings. You'll work at a cricket club located opposite the Auckland harbor, just a short ferry ride away from your accommodation.

There are excellent facilities and you'll coach a number of junior teams. You'll also have the opportunity to coach, train, and possibly play for the senior men's teams, if you get selected. The junior teams at the clubs fall under the following age groups:

  • 6 - 7s softball,

  • 7 - 9's little league,
  • 10 - 13's hardball

If you  would also like to play cricket on this project, you can do this with a number of senior teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the club so there is something for everyone.

As well as training and playing for one of these teams, you may also be able to coach them if you're considered good enough. There are a number of senior teams that you can train with and play for:

  • 4 senior 1 day grades (50 over cricket)

  • 5 senior 2 day grade cricket

THE CRICKET SEASON AND COACHING TIMES:
The cricket season runs from:

  • Pre Season 1st September - 1st October (Indoor Cricket)

  • Seniors 1st 0ctober - 31st March

  • Juniors 22nd October - mid December & February - March

Coaching and training times are as follows

  • Juniors: 3:45 – 5:30 - Monday - Thursday

  • Seniors: 5:30 - 7:30 - Tuesday - Thursday

Games take place on the weekends during the season. The juniors play in the morning - you'll have the opportunity to coach the junior team, putting everything you have taught them into practice on the field. In the afternoon it will be your opportunity to play with the seniors. Out of season there will be no opportunity to play cricket at the club.

A note from the Coaching Director to Travellers: "Richard, hope all's well. As promised, just a short email to update you on things at the Cricket Club. Stu and Mark continue to be extremely valuable coaches. I have been able to utilize their coaching skills in a variety of ways, from providing specific 1-on-1 batting coaching to hardball junior players, Little-League 'intro to cricket' skill sessions, and running team fielding skills practices, depending on what is required on the day. Always, their enthusiasm and passion is obvious, and certainly both add plenty of value to the practices they are involved in. They have been coaching for three days a week, and their timekeeping and appearance is always excellent.  It has certainly been extremely successful from my perspective.'
Bruce Warner - Coaching Director

2. YOUR SPORTS PROJECT AT THE SCHOOL
The School Sports Project will take place during the day. For this element of your programme, you will be working at a school located in Auckland. The school has children from a variety of backgrounds and countries such as Maori children and children from Sudan and Somalia who are refugees, as well as children from other lower economic countries such as Samoa and Tonga. The school has good facilities that will enable you to coach a variety of different sports.

There are a wide number of sports available to coach on this project and you will be involved in a wide range of sporting activities, giving you great diversity. The sports are generally coached by season, but if you wanted to coach a sport that was not in season, or if you wanted to introduce a new sport to the children, the school would welcome it as long as it was of benefit to the children. Each school offers different sports so if there was a particular sport that you were interested in coaching please let us know and we will make arrangements for this.

The sports vary with each term, as follows:
Term 1:
Swimming, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics
Term 2:
Rugby Union & League, Football, Hockey, Netball
Term 3:
Rugby League, Football, Netball
Term 4:
Athletics, Cricket, Cross Country & Football.

PROJECT DATES AND TEACHING TIMES:

The school dates for 2015 are:

  • Term 1: 2nd Feb –2nd April

  • Term 2: 20th April – 3rd July

  • Term 3: 20th July – 25th Sep

  • Term 4: 12th Oct – 15th/18th Dec

The lessons you will be coaching in will last for 45 minutes and the school day runs from around 8:30 - 3:00 pm. You'll assist the sports teacher to coach the children and you'll spend about 3 to 5 hours a day helping the children.

FREE COACHING MANUALS:
As a volunteer sports coach with Travellers, you have access to a large number of coaching manuals for each sport - these manuals have been produced in-house by our Sports Manager. These manuals are very useful and will help you to plan coaching sessions for your students.

REQUIREMENTS:
Anyone working with children and/or vulnerable adults is required to complete a Criminal Records Check (CRC) as part of their application process. We'll provide you with the necessary papers and take you through the process.

ACCOMMODATION:
You'll live in a centrally located hostel that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You will be sharing a room with other volunteers. There is a communal kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes cheap internet access, TV and free pool table. You are literally a stroll from the Sky Tower, harbor and waterfront. Accommodation is very central and close to the main train station and shopping district. Buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to parts of Auckland and New Zealand or to the many other ‘things to do’!

FOOD:
Food is not provided on this project, but Auckland has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb which can be ordered at many restaurants around the city and is well worth it. For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.

LOCATION, EXPLORING AND SIGHTSEEING:

The country can be divided into the North Island, the South Island and Stewart Island, as well as many tiny surrounding islands. The North Island is typically famous for beaches, springs and bush, whilst the South Island boasts mountains, glaciers, alpine forests and farmlands.

AUCKLAND
The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to the viaduct for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which is close to your accommodation.

Maori settlement in Auckland was at least 800 years ago where by different tribes built theIr fortifications on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became the capital 25 years later. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun and friendly with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour.

Some of its more famous attractions include the sky tower, Rangitoto island, the harbor, the Hauraki gulf islands and the many extinct volcanoes that are in Auckland which provide great views of the city..

"Thanks at the best three months of my life ... The support I received was extremely helpful ... I really would recommend Travellers to anyone. Keep up the good work."   Stuart Savidge

Climate: New Zealand has a largely temperate climate. While the far north has a subtropical summer, the inland alpine areas can get as cold as -10°C in winter. Most of the country, however, lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures, moderate rainfall and abundant sunshine.
