Teaching in a Cape Town School on a volunteering placement in South Africa

On my last day at the Primary School one of the students in my class came running up to me yelling that he had to show me something.

This kid had been a handful the whole time I had been on my program, so I was a little concerned with what he would have to show me. He sat down and showed me he could tie his shoes. The whole time I was in his class, the teacher had been struggling all year to teach him how to tie his shoes so he would stop tripping over his laces.

I was the first person he showed and I told him I was proud of him. The huge grin on his face made me smile and for the rest of the day he told everyone he saw that I had said I was proud of him.

Knowing that in just the month I had been there I had somehow made this kid want to show me he could do something first and how happy I made him by a simple compliment really made my trip worth it.

There were a lot of hard and draining days in a class of 30+ 6 year olds, but that one moment is one I will never forget and will try to remember when I become a teacher here in the US and have difficult students.
