GAP YEAR | VOLUNTEER ABROAD | WORK EXPERIENCE OVERSEAS

TRAVELLERS UK TEAM

Jennifer Perkes: Managing Director and Co-founder
Jennifer and her husband, Phil, set up Travellers together back in 1994, driven by their mutual enjoyment of travelling (between them they had lived and worked in many different countries) and also their love of animals and their desire to help disadvantaged children. When Phil died unexpectedly in August 2004, Jennifer carried out Phil's wish and set up a non-profit Trust whose objectives are to help threatened animals and to improve the lives of disadvantaged children.
The photo is of camera-shy Jen showing excited children on one of Travellers' projects in South Africa the photo she had just taken of them. Jen's hobbies include messing around on computers, music, writing, playing with her dog and trying to find time to smell life's roses!
Countries visited: Australia, USA, Europe, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Namibia, Angola, Malawi, Sudan, Tenerife, Minorca

Andrew Kemp | Operations Director

Andrew volunteered with Travellers in South Africa, teaching English and Design Technology to township children. His love of Africa has taken him back there many times over.

His work in Travellers has taken him to most of our destination countries, and also to Australia and New Zealand where he spent a few years as Manager. While there he met and married Amber, a terrific Australian girl and has now become a Dad. We're all delighted.

Andy is in charge of Operations and Overseas Development.

Mark Johnson: Marketing Manager
Mark joined in September 2010 and comes from an extensive Marketing background. He is tasked with getting the great projects that Travellers has to offer under the noses of as many people as possible and to highlight why Travellers Worldwide really is the best of it’s kind – worthwhile projects with unrivalled ground support for volunteers in country and at home.
Having gotten the long distance travel bug out of his system, Mark likes to vacation with his young family closer to home now and is on track to conquer Europe!

Countries visited: Cyprus, Greece, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Sicily, Spain, Andorra, Gibraltar, Majorca, Menorca, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Morocco, USA, Nassau, Antigua, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Saint Martin.

gERARDO cARDINALE

Gerardo Cardinale: Financial Director

"I joined Travellers around 6 years ago and I am thoroughly enjoying working here as the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. I enjoy interacting with the teams, here and overseas, with our volunteers and I also enjoy the variety of tasks within my main duties. As a ‘typical accountant’, and as my wife would say, I tend to be quite boring with very few interests outside of my family life."  [This is SO not true - Gerardo is fascinating and a great boon to our organisation!!]

"There is nothing more satisfying than spending time with family, having a nice meal and obviously, being Italian ... a nice bottle of red wine! :-)  I have been living in the UK about 37 years and have no intention of moving back to Italy, especially as I love spending time with my four grandchildren."

Liz Tratt: Project Co-ordinator
Liz joined Travellers in 2005 and is Project Co-ordinator, with Kate Gray, of Australia, China, Morocco, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Liz is very well liked by staff and project members alike, and very much loved by the children in the schools she deals with in her destination countries.

A fair chunk of her day is spent trying to stop Jennifer's two dogs stealing papers out of her wastepaper bin! It's been good practice for her, though, now that she's had an adorable baby boy called Charlie ... the love of her life! UPDATE: Liz is currently on well-deserved maternity leave after the birth of her second boy, Luca.

When she visited the Travellers project at eMakhosini primary school in a small Zulu village in South Africa. She was overwhelmed by the welcome she received from the kids at the school and tears still come to her eyes when she thinks about them (Liz is a big softie!).

Countries visited: Thailand, Singapore, Bali, Belize, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, USA, Canada, South Africa, Egypt, Zambia and Zimbabwe

.

Jim Morel | Project Co-ordinator

A South African born and bred, Jim has been with us for over 14 years and is the fountain of all South Africa knowledge. Having been our Country Manager for many years in South Africa, he has now moved across to Ireland.

Before working with Travellers, he established an amazing Seahorse Project in Knysna. The Knysna Seahorse can only be found in the Knysna Estuary in the Western Cape. Jim established a programme aimed at restoring its habitat and educating the public... he even won an award for his efforts.

It was during this time that he began taking Travellers volunteers onto his project and looking after them, and one thing led to another until he joined Travellers full-time. Lucky us!!

Charlotte Whitehead | Project Co-ordinator, Marketing Assistant

Charlotte recently returned from co-ordinating volunteer projects in South Africa. Through her time there, she saw the direct positive impact that each and every volunteer had within the local community. Having achieved a Masters in Drama and Theatre studies in 2012, she developed a successful drama project which engaged local children and young children - sparking their creativity, building their confidence and nurturing their learning.

Charlotte's excited to be part of Travellers, which puts making a difference at the heart of its ethos. She's looking forward to helping you get started on your new adventure! Having travelled extensively, she has got great insider knowledge and tips about travelling and volunteering. In her spare time she tries to find open water in which to surf or stand up paddle board!

"I was first bitten by the volunteering bug in 2007 and I haven't looked back! Being a volunteer is exciting, perspective changing and rewarding. Yes, it can be challenging but with bags of enthusiasm and a can-do attitude - anything is possible. You can be the change you want to see in the world."

Linnea Miland Aarstad | Project Co-ordinator, Administrator

Linnea is from Norway and a couple of years ago, while she was studying Cultural Psychology in Bali, she discovered just how much she loves travelling and exploring new cultures.

She recently moved to England after spending the last two years working in Australia, mostly spent in Sydney and Melbourne. Her best memory from Australia is strangely from when she spent three months slaving away on a banana farm covered in spiders and cockroaches!

She travelled both islands of New Zealand in a camper-van before she returned home and she plans on one day doing the same thing around Europe.

Ivy Adams: Project Co-ordinator

Ivy Adams came to Travellers as an intern during her Tourism Management course at Bournemouth University. As part of her placement she was required to do a 40 week work placement, which she duly completed. She returned to University and at the end of her studies, she's returned to Travellers as a full-time member of the team ... and we are thrilled to have her back again!

Ivy was born in Ghana, so she's a natural to be dealing with Ghana and helping all our volunteers who go there. She is also Project Co-ordinator for Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Ivy has a passion for shopping and is a bit of a book worm with a particular love for Crime thrillers.

Her laughter rings out through the office all day - she's full of fun, with a great sense of humour. We all love her to bits

Countries visited: Originally travelling from her home country of Ghana she would love to travel more when the opportunity presents itself.

Joanna May | Project Coordinator, Administrator

After working as a camp counsellor at a summer camp in America teaching children about exotic animals and outdoor Activities, Joanna then returned the following summer as a senior member of staff, arranging the staff and camper’s classes. She loved her experience in America and really enjoyed her travels around the States afterwards.

From this she decided to Travel Australia for 6 months, including backpacking up the East Coast and living and working in Sydney.

Joanna enjoys organising and loves the idea of helping others gain amazing and life changing experiences!

The Canine Contributors

Well, not actually sure about "Contributors" ... haven't seen too much of that yet. But they do eat a lot, so maybe they should be known as the "Canine Consumers"!

Kizzie the Retriever can most be found hanging around next to Mark, who she adores, and Suki, the Jack Russell, is mostly found in any bin scrounging after food! Her loyalty is wide-ranging, encompassing anyone who'll give her a treat!

Countries Visited: England.
Obviously not as into travel as much as the rest of us!
